According to a report from Calciomercato’s Fabrizio Romano, Everton are interested in signing Inter Milan’s 28-year-old midfielder Matias Vecino in the January transfer window.
The report claims Inter value Vecino at €25m (£21.2m) and contact has been established between the clubs.
Having failed to impress Antonio Conte since the Italian took the reins, the player has requested a solution to his current situation.
If that solution involved a transfer to Goodison Park, there would be a clear winner and a clear loser emerging from the Toffees’ squad…
Winner: Andre Gomes
Even though he’s still out injured, Gomes may actually profit from Vecino’s potential arrival at Goodison Park in the ongoing transfer window. Even though he’s not really been a steady part of Antonio Conte’s plans in the current campaign, as Calciomercato explain, the 28-year-old midfielder still has enough quality to become a good midfield partner for Gomes.
With a key pass every 81.7 minutes in Serie A and one goal and two assists at this point in the season, Vecino could be a creative spark that could help the Portuguese midfielder get back into the groove upon his eventual return.
And with 1.9 tackles and one interception per game, the Italian is also keen on contributing to the defensive aspect of things as well and that should enable Gomes to hone in on his creative strengths.
As things currently stand, the former Barcelona man, who returned to training on Tuesday, may well find a high-quality midfielder partner waiting for him when he is ready for first team action once more.
Loser: Tom Davies
With 1375 minutes played in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign and 13 starts in the Premier League out of 23 games in total, the 21-year-old midfielder is surely starting to find his spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI.
But with Vecino knocking on the door of Goodison Park, Davies may find that position under immediate threat. Seeing how both players share a similar profile, as our analysis has shown, it may be the case of Ancelotti picking one or the other and not both.
For that reason, the 28-year-old signing could push Davies out of the starting lineup and back onto the bench if he proves to be exactly what the coach is looking for.
