The Swede estimated that, in the "best case," he might not have much longer than a year left to live. Before spending a season as manager of Manchester City, Eriksson guided England to the quarterfinals of three major tournaments during his tenure as manager from 2001 to 2006.

From 1997 until 2001, Eriksson enjoyed a trophy-filled tenure at Lazio. He won several trophies, such as the Serie A championship in 2000, the European Cup Winners' Cup (1999), and the Coppa Italia and Italian Supercup in 1998 and 2000, respectively.
